Should discussions of the greatest be limited to specific eras and roles?
For instance perhaps five eras of post players Mikan, Russel, Chamberlin, Kareem, Olajuwon and Shaq, Duncan or Garnett..
We could compare Russel to Chamberlin or Chamberlin to Kareem, Olajuwon to Shaq but maybe not Russel to Shaq or even Kareem.
Then wing players (such as The Big O and Jordan) and point guards( Cousy, Magic and Nash) being the other two roles and maybe combo guards like Jerry West or the emerging Gilbert Arenas as a sub-group.
If you agree that similar distinctions pose interesting points for debate, please consider generating a question based on these or similar criteria, I will look foreward to responding.

Yes, for styles and approaches do change.
Certainly Chamberlain and Russell may have thrived in all eras, but it’s always hard to say.

it all depends if you are asking about certain roles or eras in a question of who’s the greatest. otherwise you need to look at a player who has dominated while playing in all aspects of their play.
