Lions can’t come across tigers in the wild these days. The only country where the two species coexist is India and there too the last remaining Asiatic lions are in a separate reserve in the west of the country, by name of Gir Forest. Therefore the only possibility exists in captivity.

If a lion kills a tiger in captivity the only culprit is the human who put these two great cats together. Conflict is bound to occur in such a situation and both the big cats will be hurt, regardless of the outcome. I agree – it is unjustifiable!

How can you justify a natural process? Lions kill animals for food. Not for pleasure, not for trophies, but to sustain life. Tigers do the same thing. An animal who kills for food is not a culprit, as a culprit is a person who is doing something illegal. That means doing something prohibited under human law. As neither lions or tigers are human, they are not bound by human laws. But they do need to eat, and no matter whether the lion kills the tiger or the tiger kills the lion, they are only following natural law.

Given that this is a hypothetical question since lions and tigers don’t live in the same areas, neither is the culprit and the act need not be justified. These are animals, hence are absolved from the humane rules we as humans should follow. This is simply nature doing what nature does.

Well, the habitats of lions and tigers don’t overlap- it is highly unlikely that a lion will meet a tiger in its lifetime in the wild, unless it’s in the zoo. But from your question, it seems like the lion is the culprit.

Tigers are more powerful than lions. So a lion doesn’t usually pickup a quarrel with a tiger. It should be the tiger that starts. A lion killing a tiger is also less heard of
