READING HELP….its just so bad?

Okay, I have to read Crime and Punishment for my AP Literature class and its just not going well. I read The Great Gatsby for the class already and loved it. I also had to read The Heart of Darkness which sucked but it wasn’t long so I dealt.

i really love to read alot. But when it comes to C&P i just can’t get in to it. It is really boring and long(500 pgs+). Is there any tricks or things that can make it easier to read this book?

I use cliff notes to understand it but is there a way to motivate me or make it more enjoyable?

I will be reading a lot of books during school I may not find very interesting so I was wondering if anyone knew any ways to make it better on me.

THANKS in advance!!

Man, you have to read all the heavy stuff over the summer? That stinks. I had AP Lit too, but all I had to read were The Remains of the Day, Death of a Salesman, Heart is a Lonely Hunter, and Book of Job. Those were at least somewhat summer-appropriate.

Invent a game. Pick a random plot element and trace it through the book, and give it a symbolic importance. Interpret the book in crazy fashions.

Or I don’t know if this’ll work, but try to find a childrens’ version! That always helps when I have to learn history–they condense the material down to the relevant bits, and then you can fill in the details later by reading the real book.

I;m in the same boat. :/ I’ll be in AP Lit next year too but i’m reading Portrait of The Artist As A Young Man and it’s a short book but it’s driving me insane. It uses really old words that I don’t understand and it’s written in just short strings of totally random unrelated thoughts.

There is no way to make reading bad books more enjoyable that I can think of, you just have to plow through it and think of how much better you’ll feel when you’re done.

I don’t even read every page, I just sort of skim paragraphs and that makes it go a little faster, while still getting the basic idea of whatever the hell he’s trying to say. Good luck.

Get a group of friends together and discuss the book.Ask the English teacher if you can have reading groups in class so you can discuss the book. For long and boring books read at least a couple of chapters at night. On the bus or in your spare time. That way you get the book read faster. My daughter has to read nine books a term and do projects on the books.Reward yourself for when you have read at least half the book such as when you get to 250 pages.

Try Sparknotes.com, see if the book is in there. It breaks down the chapters so you can just get to the point. I used it for Huck Finn (that book SUCKED). Good luck!
