How can my kid fit in quick?
Although we’re Canadians, my kids have lived their whole lives in Africa. Now my son’s about to start Grade 6 in a Canadian school – what’/s important for him to know so that he can find his feet quickly? Thanks!

Visit parks and such with your children to get an idea of whats cool there. what they wear, do, play. Tell you kids to smile frequently and say hello when somone is looking at them. Most kids are just going to be curious about them and not sure how to go on themselves. But most of all relax. Kids laugh about alot of things tell them to not become oversensitive about this anything different is funny so tell them not to be offended. (i’m not suggesting them being made fun of is okay just that they should not percieve it all as being made fun of. try to learn the difference) Some kids online rooms are popular in some areas if your comfortable with that let them go online and talk to other canadian kids. good luck to them i hope all goes well.

Try to look like everyone else. Join a team. Get to know the kids in the neighborhood even before school starts. Go to the school to see if there is a playground or sports field maybe a classmate will be there hanging out . Talk to others. He will be fine . Don’t you get to involved or he will be labeled a “mommas boy”

Encourage him to join a sports team or a club that he is really interested in, that way he can make friends with kids with similar interests.
And what ever you do, don’t embarass him! Give him some space when he is around his peers.
