How to deal with little kids @ vacation bible school?

I am the leader of these 1st graders in vacation bible school. Plz give me tips!

Ok here is my problems.

1) I have a little kid that is very shy. He always wants to sit next to me while we are doing the activities. He will not get up and sing with the other kids while we are singing at the begining and end.

2) My kids seem really bored while we are doing stuff.

3) How to get them to particapate?

That is all i can think of right now. Today was our first day, so i don’t know if it is just the first day or they don’t want to have fun. Plz help if you can!!!

Its only the first day. Give the kids a chance to get to know each other and you. In no time they will have fun. As a leader you need to be their friend, motivated to do each and every activity, and love what you are doing without forgetting what the purpose of VBS is, for children to learn about God. I’ve done VBS for several years now. I’ve been both a group leader and in charge of all the 4 and 5 year olds. Don’t worry, the kids will love you and love VBS.

Don’t take it personally if they seem like they aren’t having a good time. My second graders only want to run around outside or play video games, so it’s a restless age to pay attention.

the first day is tough, i’m thinking after a few classes they will become your friend. i would just give them lots of praise when they do stuff right or be nice. 1st graders can be so cute!

Young children will get involved they are just waiting for you to give them an instruction or explain what you are going to do and how to do it. They are not teenagers who can think for themselves yet. Be happy just work out actions for a song and then teach it to them. The quiet boy may be a bit fearful of being away from his family. If this is the first time he has been away from home that can be scary. He needs reassurance.

Well you see the problem isn’t you, it’s that they hate god. They feel sad that they are forced to go get an education on a made up mythological creature, and what is worse they have to do it durring a time when they are supposed to be having fun, the summer. My sugjestion is to ignore all the bible verse memorizing mumbo jumbo, and the praise singing, and let the kids go outside run around and have fun.
