Well, it always depends on the grade level, but here are a few of my favorites that I read in high school:

To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee)

Joy Luck Club (Amy Tan)

Gulliver’s Travels (Swift)

The Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne)

The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini)

The Pact (Jodi Picoult) <--- One of my favorites Hamlet (Shakespeare) <-- Favorite Shakesperean play

If you are going to read The Scarlet Letter be aware that the opening chapter ‘The Custom House’ is long and not that similar in style to the rest of the novel – so if that starts bogging you down a little, keep going. I would suggest anything and everything by Jane Austen. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I’m the King of the Castle by Susan Hill. I always enjoyed Robert Cormier. You could do a lot worse than work your way through a lot of the Penguin Classics – Conan Doyle, H Rider Haggard, Robert Louis Stevenson etc. I would also suggest reading a little Shakespeare – it is fab.

I can tell you one book NOT to read

Catcher in the Rye

it is a self-loathing, annoying teenager

and the character is so broad that any hormonal trainwreck can relate to him.

Also, any book you like. I have no specific suggestions

but for politics and what not –

“War is a force that gives us meaning” by Chris Hedges

and

“American Fascists”

I read a book in highschool (about 5 years ago) called ‘The Good Book’. It had nothing to do with religion, but soccer and referred to the way soccer fans treat soccer like religion.

It was a fictional story about a soccer team and I must say it was one of the best books I’ve ever read. I wouldn’t have a clue who wrote it nor published it but if you find it can you tell me please? lol

This might be helpful if you are looking for something standardized:

I particularly remember ‘The Crucible,’ ‘Death of a Salesman,’ ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ and ‘The Great Gatsby,’ though my favorite was ‘Welcome to the Ark’ – a book I chose for myself on independent study.
