Call your school district and find out who is the Chief Examiner for the GED exam. Then, find out which classes are the ones they offer. If a GED prep program is offered by the same people that administer the exam,or the school district, then they are likely the best funded and are using the bests materials to teach you. Stick with them, because they will likely have well experienced teachers. If you need to remediate your skills, they will help you do it as quickly as possible and no matter how much you think it’s stupid or you don’t need to do it, make yourself! Hopefully, you will test high enough that you don’t need remediation, but prepare yourself to re-learn some things if you don’t pre-test high enough. They can get you ready if you do the work they give you, I promise! Likewise, for a tech program at the vocational school, you will likely need to pass a basic skills test to qualify, so the GED classes will help you build skills to get the minimum score for that program too (you’re killing two birds, with one stone!). The GED class and the vocational school may actually use the same basic skills test, which is great for you.

Whatever you do, DO NOT PUT THIS OFF:)! I worked with students just like you for 7 years, and with the best of intentions they would start a class, fizzle out, and then I would see them when they were 21 or 22, in a low paying job working 50-70 hours a week, ready to finish school and still having to pass a GED exam first (and not a spare moment to go to class). Your skills will get rusty, which is why you need to work on this now that you are fresh out of school.

It sounds like you are ready to do this because you have goals past high school, which is great! My best advice to you is: Do not let ANY personal ‘circumstances’ get in the way of you completing high school and your pharm-tech training. I know it is hard, but your life will start speeding up dramatically and you will never have this much energy or spare time to concentrate on your schooling again. Any education is a sacrifice, even if your parents pay for everything. The reason educated people make more money is because they made this sacrifice, not because somebody just ‘likes them more’. Best wishes on your education!

Are there any junior colleges or community colleges nearby? They offer GED preparation and administer the exam. You can check with them. Also, please contact your school district; they may be able to provide you with assistance in completing your GED. Trust me – your school district will be happy to help you complete your education. Good Luck!!!!
