Losing his sister. By the way, this is considered THE BOOK studied in west Africa to help students understand the period of Atlantic slavery. You need to just read the thing. Whatever excerpt is in your textbook will not tell you the truth about Equiano. He came to the New World as a captive, but he earned his freedom and made the choice to stay as a free man. By the time he died he owned three farms and a fleet of whaling ships, so he could have gone “home” any time he wanted. The truth is, like other immigrants willing or unwilling, he WAS HOME ALREADY. He was a very successful self-made American man. To me, that’s more important than the shame of what happened during his childhood.
