I am Homeschooled and turning 16, any Ideas what I should do for Drivers Ed?

Some school districts allow HS’ed students to take Driver’s Ed, so check with yours.

Another option is to go to a driving school in your area.

You can always ask your insurance agent where you can go. Since they give discounts for taking driver’s ed and defensive driving courses, they should know who administers them.

I checked the Driver’s Ed in a Box site and it’s not an “approved” driver’s education course in my state. Check your state’s page on their site before purchasing it and spending the money!!!

A lot of States no longer offer it at the schools, those that do often will let you attend. Many of them only offering it during the summer.

Some states offer online courses – CA being one of them – where you study online/at home and test then you receive a certificate in the mail to take to the DMV and a local driving school. Check out your states DMV website for links/requirements.

You will of course have to meet the States requirements on hours.

Drivers ed in a box is widely used or you can use Safe Young Drivers in conjunction with the school/online drivers ed.

An ACCREDITED driving school that OFFERS classroom education is usually accepted by states.

Drivers ED is primarily used to get a PERMIT at 15 1/2 instead of at 17 1/2

YOu can always call up the DMV and ASK if there are private courses they will ACCEPT.

This is going to cost money, you understand!

You can use “Driver’s Ed in a Box” (driveredinabox.com) or a local driving school. In my state, the schools do not offer driver’s ed, you have to go to a private school. We are fortunate to have an awesome one close by that all the students use.

I’ve known several families that use “in a box” and they really like it. It combines computer learning with in-car learning.

You can usually find it on sale at book fairs and such.

The cost is somewhere between $150-250?

Check with your state driver’s licensing office (Dept. of Public Safety, etc.) to see what options are available in your state. You could also ask within your local homeschool group to see what others have done. Since each state’s laws are different, the answer will depend on where you live.

Depending on your state requirements; ours are simple; study, and take the written test to receive your temporary driving permit, get the needed driving experience by getting your driving hours with your parents/older sibling as the instructor; when ready take the drivers license test.

If you’d like to take the drivers education classes at a public/private school, all you have to do is sign up, and pay the fee.

As far as I know, and please correct me if I am wrong, because as with any rulings this may have changed in the last few years, drivers education was ruled a safety course rather than an educational course meaning they cannot refuse any ones application to take the course.

Yep, Driver’s Ed in a Box. Your folks teach you Driver’s Ed, it’s a complete course and accepted by the DMV. My son’s not there yet (9.5), but it’s what I’ll most likely use when he gets old enough.

I didn’t take drivers ed. I just went to the bmv and took the written test and got my permit. then I waited 6 mo. and took the drivers test. It is legal here…I don’t know about where you live tho….check it out.

Your parents can instruct you in Driver’s Ed the same way they instruct you in other subjects.

Other alternativs would be to take a course through a driving school, or if your state allows it to take the course through your local high school. However, if it is not required in order to obtain your driver’s license I would just let your parents instruct you. Even if it IS required-they can instruct you without any complications so do not think I am saying they can not…
