I want to go to college. I am applying to several in my area. I dont have a job, but my husband does. neither of us has a credit score and my parents refuse to cosign for a loan. i dont know much about financial aide or student loans. How do I find out what I qualify for and how much its gonna cost?

Like everyone else has said – fill out the FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid. You can fill it out online at www.fafsa.ed.gov for free. All you need is the tax information from 2006. It will be based on your and your husband’s 2006 income as well as family size and number in college.

The Federal Processor will take your income information and put it through a formula which will determine your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) which is the amount the government believes you can put towards your education – it does not mean you ‘have to pay’ that amount – it is the amount they believe based on what you reported you could put towards educational expenses.

List the several colleges that you are applying to and see what each college will offer you in respect to the Federal Pell Grant, your State Grant, and any other Campus based aid. If you mark on your application that you are interested in Student Loans, they will also award you loan money. As an independent, 1st year student, you should be eligible for a maximum of $8500 in loans.

I would also recommend checking out the college websites to find out what their current year tuition and fee charges are.

Hope this helps you out.

Join the military or at least the national guard,, rite now there getting a bad rap because of the Iraq war but just because you join does not mean you are getting an all expenses paid vacation over there there are several options available and many that you can even apply towards whatever career field you are pursuing (from piano players to pie makers),, and the experience is priceless you meat people from all around the world and get to travel to .(without even having to pay a cent)!! consider you’re options be paying off youre college loans and living pay check well into you’re 30s or 40s,, or have you’re degree in what you want by the time you’re 30, be well travelled have friends all across the US and the world. and be debt free. i myself did the military route and have no regrettes. ill be getting my masters in a year without a cent in student loans or debt and I have a brand new car that fully paid for to top it off,, and im only 23( a year and a half behind my pears,, but they don’t have as many friends or have been as many places as me and they have a crap-load of debt,, there all ways complaining about to me as well) So weigh you’re options and go chat with a recruiter and if the Military is just not you’re thing or you don’t qualify (for health reasons or sump tin) @ least you get a free lunch out of it,, and you cant beat that.

Apply for financial aid when applying and upon acceptance (around spring 2008). You could get grants and scholarships for colleges and it could cost you NOTHING or very little. Work on getting into college and contact the school’s financial aid office and so on. I was 16 and did it by myself, 17 got $20,000 in loans without a parent.

Fill out the FAFSA. This is a government-based loan form. If you qualify for aid or if you qualify for a government loan, you will get the aid after filing the FAFSA. You shouldn’t need a cosigner either.
