some FAFSA questions?

the fall 2007 semester starts august 23rd for me and i haven’t filled out the financial aid application. if i fill it out tonight, will i get a response [whether or not i’ll get aid] in time for the semester? i also have loans from the 2005-2006 semester and am now paying them off: will that conflict with me getting loans this time around? i was a dependent [living with my parents] during the 2005-2006 semester, but i’ve since taken a break from school and now i’m married. i don’t know if that [being married/not a dependent] will have an effect on me getting financial aid. sorry for so many questions, but thanks in advance:-]

You have until June 30 of 2008 to fill for the 07-08 FAFSA. Most schools have whats called a priority deadline you have to meet so that they can process your FAFSA in time before school starts. Check with your school to see when that deadline is. If it has passed your aid may not be there in time before school starts but you can still get aid. Also the longer you wait the less in aid you may get so you may not get as much as you could have if you had applied earlier but no it is not too late.

Any prior aid like federal loan you received in the past have no baring on how much in aid you get the following year as loan as you have not defaulted on your student loans or owe money back to the govt. like a Pell grant that was not used due to dropping out, etc..

Being married does effect your financial aid because now you are considered a independent therefore your calculations on what aid you get is based on a different formula that does not calculate what your parents should contribute so normally you are eligible for more aid.

Hope this helps and good luck!

It depends on your particular situation. (Sorry – I know you probably didn’t want to hear that!) I will say that there is no reason why you shouldn’t receive your Student Aid Report, also known as SAR (which includes your EFC or “expected family contribution”) within a few working days of filling out the FAFSA. However your school will have it’s own schedule dictating when students will get their award letters. For example, my institution is supposed to have our financial aid packages prepared within 3-4 weeks after completion of our “files.” That is, if they request additional documentation (i.e. copies of taxes or W2s), then one’s file is not considered complete until after all of those papers have been turned in. Unfortunately for me, my financial aid office is behind on award letters and I was just told that it will probably be delayed for another couple of weeks. Like you, I’m starting school before the end of August and it’s kind of *really* important to know what financial aid I’m receiving for the 2007-2008 academic year!

Also, from what you’ve stated here, I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t be able to take out some more loans. As for your recent marriage (congrats!), I can’t begin to speculate what kind of effect that will have on your aid. That will be based entirely on your and your spouse’s income last year.

Good luck!!

I would say go ahead and submit your application. It may or may not be too late, but there is no harm in trying. However, I would be amazed if you received any money before class starts.

As long as you aren’t in default on your prior loans, it should not be a problem.

Being independent will most likely make you eligible for more aid than before. But, this is not necessarily true.
