Can i apply for scolarship for college at 13?

I know that in like 5 years i am going to need money for college. My parents save money but they are only gonna have like $20,000 and thats enough for like 1 year at most places. And right now i am like freaking out because i can’t really do much about it. So i was wondering if any places let you apply at a young age. I’m 13. (links would be nice)

Wow! This is great that at age 13 you are thinking about college. I tell ya you are already ahead of the game! Let me give you some pointers. This may become a book but I will keep it as short as I can. Lets first talk about saving for college. Have you and your parents together check out Upromise.com. They can help you save for college two ways. First through a 529 savings plan. Not sure if that is what your parents have now in savings. There is more info on this on the website. The other way is through spending. Since your parents already spend money on everday things if they do that with participating Upromise vendors a portion of their spending is put away in an account to help you pay for college. There is no fee for this it is free. I use it and let me give you an example. I have my credit cards registered with Upromise. I buy gas because we all do. If I go to Exxon Mobil and use my card to pay for gas and I buy at least 30 gallons of gas a month, Exxon will contribute 1 cent for every gallon bought into my account. It does not seem like much but it will add up and help reduce the cost of education.

Now lets move on to scholarships. Are there scholarships for 13 year olds? There may be but remember that most scholarships are geared more towards juniors and seniors since they are closer to going to college. That should not stop you from trying. You’ll just need to check the criteria for getting those scholarships. And even if you do not qualify now because of your age it helps to do the research so you know early what the qualifications are and you can start working on those so that when it is time you have met those qualifications. A great website to start at is collegeanswer.com. It has a free scholarship database. I would also encourage your parents to sign up. They can get great material on how to help you prepare and finance your education.

Here are some other ways to help reduce the cost of education. Go to a school in state. Your tuition is lower then if you were to go out of state if you attended a state college or university. Start at a college close to home where you would not have to pay room and board since you could stay with your parents while in college. 2 year college are typically cheaper then a 4 year so it does not hurt to get your 2 years out the way at a community college and then transfer to a 4 year university. Just talk to the college at that time to ensure all credits can be transfered to the new school. Have a selection of colleges you want to attend. Because when it is time to apply for federal aid, each college will give you different types and amount of financial aid. That will help you compare which school is most cost effective. All these tips can be found on collegeanswer.com. Not only does that website have a free scholarship search it also helps you prepare for college.

Hope this helps and you are on the right track. Good Luck!!!

Poor College Kid
I don’t think theres any scholarships your there for those not in their junior year of high school or above, there might be one maybe two.

If your serious about this the best you could do right now is

get all A’s and research scholarships, look at the ones that have been around forever and start writing your essays for them.

Some essay questions I’ve seen used a lot are

1) Describe a person, place, or issue that is important to you.

2) Tell us why you deserve to win this scholarship.

3) If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

4)What do you consider to be the single most important societal problem? Why?

5)Pick an experience from your own life and explain how it has influenced your development.

I hope this helps you and good luck

You can always go to your counselor at your school and ask if they know of any as well. Good Luck
