State opinions in analytical essays like, “In my opinion, i believe, i think?”?
Favorite Answer
2. Formal essays are generally written in the third person, so there is no place to write”I think.”
3. Any opinion is open to debate. Backing up one’s opinion with personal experience, common knowledge or referenced facts gives it substance and demands, at least, respect and consideration from the reader even if the reader does not agree with the opinion.
It bothers me when I see something stated as a fact when it’s really an opinion, or stated in that tone of voice as if to say ‘Well, everybody knows . . . ‘ It makes me think the writer is trying to put one over on me, and I don’t want to just take his word for other things that I don’t know about.
So I think phrases like ‘in my opinion’ or ‘I believe’ or even ‘I feel’ are important.
