Do you have to be a confident person to complete a CELTA course?

I learned lots of things from it, from classroom management to teaching methods and approaches.

Don’t be nervous coz you’re not alone. You’ll be put in a group and everybody will help you out, the tutors will definitely be there to give you a total support.

Confidence can be worked on, that’s why you’ve got the course to practice and work on your confidence. Trust me, even the most experienced teacher can feel nervous at times due to some reasons.

Don’t give up your dream and passion to be a teacher. If you really wanna be a teacher, nothing should stop you from doing it.

I just completed my CELTA in June and i was feeling exactly as you are now.

I also have a fear of speaking in front of people and you know my confidence isnt all that!!

I can assure you though that this course is one of the best things you can do.

Even though the other people look confident i can assure you they are not!!! They are in the same boat as you and are just trying to keep a brave face.

I did my CELTA with people all older than me, i was the youngest(24) the rest were from 27 and above, i was with a retired lecturer and a very successful lawyer etc.

Every single one of them although experienced with talking to large groups of people were as nerve wrecked as i was for TP.

Dont stress!! My father during this course always told me take one day at a time!! Let each day take care of itself.

You will eventually start finding it easier to teach the students because they become like friends. Speak to them outside of class and be friendly as you would with anyone.

Keep in mind that they are learning and are looking to you for guidance so they will not be disrespectful or think anything bad of you.

Each time i went up to teach i would be nervous as hell, i would feel like i would want the ground to swallow me up but as time went by i became more confident because i enjoyed teaching the students and they enjoyed learning. The feedback from tutors helped as well because they were very encouraging and showed me i could actually do it and i was a good teacher, the critisicm they give helps alot too because you then know what to change.

Remember we are all confident in one way or another and new things always frighten us (me more than others- LOL!!) but just think of the goal you have and what you will receive at the end of that month. It was enough to get me out of bed every morning and it was a real challenge but i can proudly say that i am a teacher now.

I am now teaching at the same college i did my CELTA in and its still a bit nerve wrecking but im getting there!!
