How much English do you need to know to be able to teach English in China?

If it helps to answer, I am a native English speaker. I want to teach but I feel that I might not know enough theory.

Thanks.

Well, just because you speak English, it does not mean you qualified to TEACH it, which is why you have to go to school for it. When teaching people from other countries our language, you have to follow certain guidelines, and make sure you are teaching it properly. Since you say you are a Native English Speaker, i’m sure you know enough to help someone learn English, but for example, if you use a lot of slang, you can’t teach that, b/c it’s not PROPER English. Example:

“I don’t wanna go to school today, cause i’m so tired!”

The proper English way to both say and spell this would be:

“I don’t want to go to school today, because I am (I’m) too tired!”

Most people who speak English don’t go around talking proper english all day everyday, ya know? Just go to college and major in Teaching English as a second Language…Good Luck! : )

1. You need a legitimate college degree. Whether you’re applying to be a teacher at a private language school or interested in providing private lessons many of the schools and/or parents are looking for someone with a credible and respectable COLLEGE education. I had to provide my interviewer with a college diploma.

2. Your command of mandarin doesn’t have to be perfect but you should be able to carry at least a crude conversation. I was provided an assistant translator.

Advice offered by some of the contributors to this thread is untrue. You do not NEED a degree in “teaching ESL.” A teaching certification is not required at all. Schools provide training programs to prep you for the challenges you will face and what is to be expected of you. (at which point they may provide you with a generic certificate of completion)

To be a teacher, first of all, you will need a certificate / qualification

Language-wise, as a native speaker, you have the advantage but I think the authority concerned would also like to see how well you can interact with the students.

May try apply job in international school. Good luck

I think the more important question for you is how much Chinese you should know to teach English in China.

BEING A NATIVE SPEAKER IS A GREAT ADVANTAGE FOR YOU COS YOU ONLY NEED TO LEARN WHY THIS IS THAT AND NOT HOW THIS IS THAT.

JUST ACQUAINT YOURSELF WITH THE GRAMMATICAL RULES TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN TO YOUR STUDENTS WHY THIS SHOULD BE THAT.

you not only need to know how to speek it

you need to know parts of a sentence

how to put a sentence together

poems

adverbs

stuff like that you should try and study if you dont feel you might not know enough
