Is it normal to be scared about going to college?

This will be my first time to be away from my parents for more than a week. I get really scared thinking about it. Is this normal?

Oh yeah! It would be completely weird if you WEREN’T scared! And your parents would be offended- don’t you think- if you didn’t miss them:)

Of course such a change is difficult at first -we’re all scared of big steps in our lives, of separation from loved ones, of responsibility:) But why stare at the empty half of the glass? Look at the full part: you’ll meet new, wonderful friends..you’ll be able to do whatever you want w/out having your parents nag:) You’ll go to parties! Plus you’ll get a good, solid education which will help you get the job you want. And you can talk to your mom every day on the phone..and see our parents on weekends or on vacations.

Don’t think of the BIG, SCARY picture…take it one day at a time. Breathe. If I could do it (and I was very nervous:) so can you:))))

Hey. Its completely normal to be scared and nervous. I packed up and went to Florida! ( I’m from upstate NY) I’m REALLY close to my family and extended family and I was a 23 hour drive from everyone! I taught my mom how to use Yahoo IM and now i can video chat when I’m starting to get homesick. But if you think about it… You’ll only be alone for a few weeks before parents weekend.. then thanksgiving, then the holidays. then easter…. !!! Get excited, College is alot of fun and really exciting.

as a university student who is away f7months i ‘d say it’s not gonna be as tough as you might think innitially.you will be feeling homesick for a while ,but dont worry every thing will rom home more than be ok very soon.you are gonna find nice freinds and get accostumed to a new environment.most importantly you will find the opportunity to stay on your own foot ,live the true life of a human and feel independent.during the coming years you will have the chance tothink about what you have learned in your home and possibly evaluate and question them like what i did 6 years ago.good luck dear monkey.

Absolutely!! It wouldn’t be normal to not be scared. You are entering not only a new phase of life, but also a new lifestyle. And it’s the same for college students of any age. I started college at age 34 and was terrified. But once I got started, my fears subsided. the fact that you are concerned about your fear shows that you really care, so you’ll do great. Best wishes.

it’s definitely normal!! i bet that within a week of being at college you’ll be settled in and happy to be away from your parents. if you have a hard time adjusting, talk to the resident adviser on your dorm floor, they’re there to help you if you need it.

by the way, at the risk of sounding like a cliche, college was the best time of my life!! i would give anything to go back.

It’s perfectally natural, in fact I was the same way when I started a year ago. Of course, it’s always best to have a friend with you. However, if you don’t have one going to that school, there’s no problem because you’ll meet so many new ones at orientation.

Just remember: Everyone feels that way too, they just don’t want to show it.

Yeah, It’s normal. Go watch the Son-In-Law with Pauly Shore and see how the gal in that movie changes her mentality of college. 🙂

Once you get used to living alone, it will be the only way to go from there on out. I love my parents, but I couldn’t stand having to live with them anymore.
