is the PsyD as respected as the PhD?
i have been unable to get a straight answer out of any of my professors about this (probably because the school i go to has a PsyD program and they dont want to make the program look bad) but i was wondering if a PsyD in clinical psych is as respected as a PhD in clinical psych? because i got the impression from some people that they were almost considered second class citizens

The PsyD is designed to train practicing psychologists while the PhD in Psychology is designed to train psychology professors. You might go to the website of the American Psychological Association for more information on these two different models for doctoral training in psychology.

I don’t think so, I’m sorry. Many of my former classmates and friends are considering PsyD’s but they really don’t measure up in MOST circumstances. I’m assuming you already know the basic differences – PhD’s are more research oriented, while PsyD’s are practice oriented. The thing is, a PsyD is not really taken seriously in Academia. In private practice, this is of course a different story.

I’m not in education so don’t take my word, but I would think a PhD would marginally outrank (for want of a better word) a PsyD because it suggests a broader field of study.
