Taking notes – bio major?

this may be a dumb question, but is it better to take notes on a laptop or in an actual notebook? what are the pros/cons of each?

Hi there, another bio major here =)

I would recommend using the traditional paper notebook.

I say this because I find it’s much easier to organize my notes, if they’re all in sequential order, like in a paper notebook. When you are taking notes on a laptop, it’s much harder to do things like, write notes in the margin, draw tables, draw diagrams, or draw pictures.

In my last bio class…. we were writing notes sooo fast, hehe, that if you tried to spend time drawing a table on a laptop, you would be far behind in note-taking.

Now, you may want to consider one of those notebook-PCs. You know, they have the screen that swivels around and you can actually write on the screen. Those might be a good option. I would only worry about organizing the files on the computer.(….they might get lost).

In any event, I personally use the paper method, because it allows much more note-taking freedom. =)

Good luck!!!

I would say a notebook is better. An even better suggestion…print out the professor’s powerpoints, since you are a bio major ( I am too) you will definitely encounter a class where the professor is all about powerpoints. Print these out before class, review them quickly. Take notes on these, circle anything he emphasizes, adding anything he elaborates on, things like that. A lot of exams are based on the powerpoints so having your own “version” is great.

Notes on paper is much better. May not be faster and your hand may hurt more but honestly you’ll retain more information for the test. With notebooks it practically goes through one ear and out the other. You can even listen to lectures better while youre writing on paper.
