My son wants to do online college courses from a college in Pittsburgh. Does anyone know if these are legit?

I am not sure how to check out the online college to see if it is some kind of scam.

Any institution you are considering should be regionally accredited. Regional accreditation is the same for online or onground courses.

You can check for the school here:

http://www.chea.org/search/default.asp

Do not go to the university website, their claims of accreditation can be false or misrepresented. Verify in through the 3rd party. It should be accredited by one of the 6 regionals.

Check out the school’s website and see if they are accredited and by whom. There are 7 regional accrediting associations in the US, and if this school is accredited by one of them, then it is as legit as Harvard or Yale. Almost all colleges have some type of online courses or degrees available. Your stereo-typical image of the online schools simply being diploma mills is outdated.

Many accredited universities are using e-learning.

In my opinion there are some courses that are suitable for this type of learning, but not every course. For example, Project Management is a course whose main focus is on interacting with people. In my opinion it is not well suited to be taught online.
