An Italian friend of mine says it’s actually a name: Baccigalupi, which has been distorted to mean something like”big dope.” Kind of like I might call someone I thought of that way a “Gomer” after Gomer Pyle.
I have no knowledge of Italian, though, so if he’s pulling my leg, I wouldn’t know it.
