He stretched on the grass himself, and with his hands behind his neck, his hat resting on his chest, looked up at the bright patch of blue sky, peeking through the thick and luscious leaves of the trees.
He valued this forest more than any other part of land outside Dodge City, because his grandparents had ridden on wagons for days *traveling the waterless sandhills, parking their wagons in a circle at night and sleeping in the middle of it with the rest of the pioneering families to have some *safety from Marauding Indians. It was a *wild game they had played, and according to his granny, they had had their own share of putting out burning arrows that pierced their wagon.
Yet, unlike the regions where the early settlers had chosen to stay, over on the east side of the country, the place where his grandparents, and the families who traveled along with them had decided to build their homes in, his beloved Dodge City, was the *pure definition of the West and he was damn proud of it.
His grandpa H.L Sitler Sr., who was the first settler of the place had said; “If you stood on the hill above Dodge City, there was traffic as far as you could see, 24-hours a day, seven days a week on the Santa Fe Trail.”
Henry was lucky to have discovered this hidden lake in the forest over the hills, half a day’s ride away from his town. He closed his eyes, thinking of the last hunt him and his ranch hands had ventured, riding after *vast herds of buffalo, to bring some home, sothat his ranch hands could skin and dry them in order to trade for some new cattle.
Just as he was dozing off, his eyes snapped open to the sound of hoofs hitting the ground. As he sat up, a little dazed, he was looking at the most beautiful woman he had laid his eyes on. The native american princess, after his very own heart, was looking down at him from the back of her majestic white horse.
She didn’t speak for awhile, she quietly studied him, as if trying to decide what to make of this stanger she found lying by her sacred lake. She decided that he did have an honest enough face, and maybe due to the disadvantage of his position where had to look up to her, he looked slightly nervous.
She was instantly on guard as the stanger slowly stood up. Then he held out the palm of his hand open at his eye level, a sign that he meant peace and no harm.
Feeling somewhat comforted in seing his flustered expression, she dismounted and led her horse to the lake, as she ran her hand lovingly on the horse’s beautiful shiny skin, she kept her eyes on this man.
Finally, Henry, feeling impatient and awkward, took a step towards her while wondering how to tackle the language barrier.
His attempts in trying to relay his thoughts through sign language made her laugh and she said, ” I’m Singing Rain. I’m the princess of my tribe and my brother is the Chief Grey Wolf. He taught me your language when I was a little girl, and your men started visiting our camp for trading buffalo hides”.
Henry, relieved and amazed, extended his hand, “My name is Henry J. Sitler Jr.and I own a ranch back in Dodge City. You can call me Henry”. Then he sheepishly put his hand down when she simply stared at it and lifted her chin. Natives weren’t into handshakes, he should have known better.
Henry, silently cursing himself for not knowing much about the customs of her tribe, made another attempt to break the ice, while wondering why he was suddenly feeling like a teenager, ” That’s a mighty beautiful horse you got there, what’s her name?”, though he already knew the answer through the little inquiry he had done with the traders about this princess.
Her face brightened up as she looked at her beloved horse and said, “She’s White Cloud”, she is faster than the wind and she is very protective of me”. As she leaned her face on her horses neck, for a moment she let her guard down and looked as innocent and pure as an angel.
Henry, not realizing he was holding it, let out his breath and wondered what he could do to get her to laugh, the way she did when she thought she was alone and talking to her horse by the lake, when he had first laid his eyes on her.
Then a light bulb flashed in his brain; He was going to invite her to the annual festival in Dodge City, where there would be lots of fun, games, food and dancing.
