Long ago, when artists used to make bronze sculpture, they would cast a mold for it and pour the molten bronze inside the mold. When they removed the mold, the sculpture would be intact. The artist would then “break the mold” so that the person buying it would be assured that the same statue could never be reproduced again. So when they say “They really broke the mold when they made you” means that you are original.

Breaking the mold means doing something differently from others that makes you stand-out and be remembered.

it often is used to describe unique or extraurdinary people—-the expression–they broke the mold after they made him—inferring that there will be nobody like him again(as the mold they made him in is now broken and cannot be reused)
