what does it mean when people say “i took it upon myself to…”?

and can you please use it in a sentence?

It means that a person elected to do a certain task themself. “Nobody wanted to try the guacamole so I took it upon myself to taste it first”

i means they did something bcuz someone else wouldnt

if no one will clean up even though it needs it i would do it and say

“i took it upon myself to clean the house”
