What does this mean?

The meaning “that is so gay” is a common phrase used widely now a days. Mostly used by men from teen to pre-adult in order to better explain something being girly. When people say “that is so gay” they are saying that is so feminen or wussy like. Basically they are putting gay; gurly, feminen, non-masculine, wussy all together. Also people can lower the meaning and just altogether make “gay” mean stupid, idiotic, meaningless, worthless, non-amusing, or any other degrating word. Gay is now a diverse meaning of sucky. Gay is not necessarily a bad thing. A girl can see a boy with a kitten in his hand and joke around saying “thats so gay” and laugh out loud; which in this case the girl finds it attractive that the boy is touching his feminen side.

some people think its a bad thing. im not gay, and i would prefer that other guys didnt look at my rear… but i dont really have a problem with gay people in general. some people are homophobic, and therefore use “gay” and “bad” interchangeably. i dont use the above expression, but i know quite a few people that do. the last time i used the word “gay” for something other than referring to people was when i sang the Flintstones theme

The original meaning of the word “gay” is “happy,” but the most common interpretation of this word nowadays is “homosexual.” At some point in recent history, someone who considered “homosexual” to be a bad thing started using the word as an insult, and it caught on. Now you hear people all the time saying things like “that is so gay,” with the meaning that the thing being targeted is bad, stupid, etc.

Interestingly, with the broad acceptance of “gay” being a general insult, it has taken on a third meaning seperate of homophobia. There are many people, particularly teenagers, who have no problem with homosexuality whatsoever, may have gay friends or relatives that they love, or are even homosexuals themselves, who use the word “gay” to mean “bad.” Homosexuals who hear them say this will generally be offended by it, despite the fact that the person saying it didn’t mean it that way at all, which can lead to a great deal of confusion.

This is a fine line which is a matter of great dispute at the moment. I know one person, for example, who is a lesbian, and her younger sisters regularly say “that is so gay” without giving a single thought to the fact that “gay” can mean “homosexual.” At times, she gets offended by this and demands that they stop saying it, claiming that “if gay can be an insult then you are insulting gay people,” but other times she recognizes that it is said without the intent of classifying homosexuality as a bad thing.

The meaning of that phrase differs depending on who is saying it and who hears it. Many people still do consider homosexuality to be a bad thing and say “that is so gay” meaning just that. Others don’t mean that at all, but use the word just because they hear it used so often in that way.

By way of comparison, consider this: in high school I knew two brothers who were jewish, but when frustrated, would regularly exclaim “Jesus Christ!” This exclamation meant nothing about their religious beliefs – they were simply so used to hearing the name used to express those feelings that it came out naturally, without thought to what it actually referred to.

In general, it’s best not to use that phrase if you don’t want to risk offending someone. Many people will not care how you intended it, only about the word itself.

When people say somethings gay it usually means something is either wierd, not right, or stupid. Even though you may not be Homophobic many people are.

Since being gay has a negative connotation it used to describe other things that are “wrong”.

When someone says that is just means you did something stupid or weird. Thats does not mean Gay is a bad thing its just a saying some people use.

this phrase has became a growing trend that everyone is beginning to say. heck, my grandmother has even said it! i am not particulary in love with the saying either, but its American slang. mostly among the younger generations that are being brought up now. all it means is “thats dumb” or” stupid” or “not cool”.

when i say that/this is so gay, i usually don’t literally mean homosexual. the meaning i went after was weird, different, and not as manly according to my opinion. hope this help

its just what teenagers say,but when they say it ,it does mean bad,or disliked,or something else…..basically,not good.but i wish that they never would have started that.it hurts many people’s felling that find it offensive,i dont blame people for being mad
