Define Ego.?
Favorite Answer
Latin word meaning “I” (I love Latin).
In psychology, the ego is the self, and in terms of Freud it’s a sort of go-between for the id (base impulses) and the superego (higher reasoning).
Someone with a big ego is full of him/herself. If your ego is “bruised,” it means either that someone has given you cause to think that your accomplishments/abilities are less than you thought the were before, similar to having your “feelings hurt,” or that you’ve failed in something beneath your estimation of yourself, you were sure you could do it but couldn’t. If you stroke/stoke someones ego, you make him/her feel better about him/herself with false or exaggerated praise. So it’s basically a person’s sense of themselves, their emotions, their abilities…
Most ideas of someones “ego” have negative connotations, as someone with an inflated ego, akin to the idea that pride is a sin. Ayn Rand (a less traditional view) would hold that the ego is the ultimate cause, and the uplifting of the ego not a sin but the proper purpose of all human action.
That’s all I’ve got, hope this helps!
